ASUS N71JQ-A1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop

I bought this offline, but also read amazon reviews before deciding. Somewhat regret Not getting it from amazon, as there is more selection here.

I am happy with my N71J...But I think I would have been happy with the 15" or 16" ASUS version also, which is about $500-$600 less. My retailer only had this one in stock though with the Intel i7 processor.

The Pros:
- awesome screen quality and sound quality.
- very quick in opening programs and saving data.
- Win 7 is great, but if you are upgrading from XP like I am...get set for a learning curve. I still cant figure out alot of functions and it'll be a while till I am fully literate.

The cons:
- I personally hate the "chiclet style" embedded keyboard, found it very hard to use. I fumbled with it for 2 days, before plugging in an external keyboard. Also with the price tag of this computer...I am worried about spilling something on it..so I think using an expternal keyboard and mouse is safer.

- It's huge...and a bit heavy, twice as heavy as average 5lb laptop..9lbs without the powerbar...and the powerbar is a brick...which adds another 3lbs easy!. I'm going to be using it at home 90% of the time, so its not that big a deal. But if I had to be on the road with it daily, I would find it cumbersome. Ladies...this big laptop also didnt fit into my fashionable, cool laptop bag, which is made for 15- 16" laptops. I'm going to have to buy a "real" laptop bag that fits a 17" or 18" computer. It also takes up quite a bit of room on my desk.

- Windows 7 is NOT compatible with alot of software and hardware. I even checked the Microsoft Win 7 compatibility page before buying my laptop...and its wrong! Now I have to say goodbye to my trusty old inkjet printer which worked fine, just cause it doesnt have a Win 7 driver. Plus re-buy expensive software like Photoshop, etc.

- built in video camera - is ok, but you need to have alot of lights on in the room or the picture is grainy.

- manufacturer doesnt make a docking station for this. ..This is not really a product defect, but I sure wish there was a docking station or port for the ASUS laptops, so I wouldnt have to re-plug in all my peripherals every time I move this thing.

Overall a good machine and you wont regret having it..but it's HUGE!.. like I said...I would have bought the 15 or 16 in if it was available when I needed it. I would say the lower grade models will suit the needs for 90% of users unless you really want it to run DVDs or high powered gaming and such.
